本日の生徒朝礼で、ＡＬＴのウィタカー・トーマス先生からみなさんへのメッセージを話していただきました。
　すべて英語だけのスピーチでした。難しかったかもしれませんが、みんな真剣に話を聞いていました。以下に全文をご紹介します。

　Tom’s English Speech:

Last week, I was very surprised about some news.
This is an English dictionary.
Now kawaii and keitei are in the English dictionary! They are English words, too!
English grows every year. Every year new words enter the dictionary.
If many people use a word a lot, it can enter the English dictionary.

Many people all over the world are interested in Japanese culture,
More and more Japanese people are communicating with the world on the internet in English, and Japanese culture is spreading, so Japanese words join the English language.

Maybe you think English is only a language for travel and business, but English is also a language for the internet, and the internet is a very useful and important tool for you to enjoy your life.

Now, more and more Japanese are making websites and communicating in English on Twitter, on Facebook, on Line. 5% of the internet is in Japanese, but 55% of the internet is in English. If you can understand English, you can access so much more information and communicate with so many more people.

If you only speak Japanese, you can only read Japanese books, magazines and internet.
You can only get news from Japanese TV stations.
You can only see Japanese movies or Japanese You Tube videos.
Some are translated from English to Japanese, but you can only read major books or see famous movies. It is a small world.

If you understand English, your world gets bigger.
You can get news and information from more places.
Even if you only live in Japan and even if you never go to another country, English can make your world in Japan bigger. It can give you a wider view.
It gives you more information from many sources.

So please…think of English as a tool for your life to be more interesting and to help you have a better life, even in Japan.

Let’s use more English in Japan!
Let’s spread Japanese culture all over the world! English is your tool.

　先週、私はあるニュースでとても驚きました。これは英語の辞書です。英語の辞書に「カワイイ」と「けいたい」という言葉があるのです。英語の単語になってしまいました。英語は毎年変わっていきます。毎年新しい英単語が辞書に載ります。ある言葉を多くの人が使えば,英語の辞書の中に載るのです。世界中の多くの人々が日本の文化に興味を持っています。どんどんと多くの日本人が英語を使ってインターネット上で世界とコミュニケーションを持っています。そして、日本の文化が広がっています。だから英語の中に日本の単語が仲間入りしています。
　たぶん、英語は旅行か仕事のための言葉としか思っていないかもしれません。でも、英語はインターネット上の言葉でもあり、インターネットは生活を楽しむのに、あなたにとってとても役に立つし、重要です。現在、どんどん多くの日本人がウェブサイトを作り、ツイッター、フェィスブック、ラインでコミュニケーションをとっています。もし、英語を理解することができれば、大量の情報を得ることができ、自分の考えを伝えることができるようになります。
　もし、あなたが日本語だけしかしゃべることができないのなら、日本語の本や雑誌やインターネットを読めるだけだし、日本のテレビ局からニュースが得られるだけだし、日本語の映画やユーチューブを見られるだけです。いくつかは英語から日本語に訳されているけれど、有名な本や映画しか見られません。それは世界が狭いと思います。
　英語が理解できれば、世界はもっと広がります。より多くの場所からのニュースや情報を得られます。日本に住んでいるだけで、外国に行かなくても、英語はあなたの世界を広げることができます。より視野が広がります。多くの情報源から、もっと多くの情報を与えてくれます。
　だから、日本にいてもあなたの生活を楽しくさせ、よりよい生活の助けとなる道具として英語を考えてください。日本でもっと英語を使いましょう。日本の文化を世界に広げていきましょう。英語はあなたの道具です。
