本日の生徒朝礼で、ＡＬＴのウィタカー・トーマス先生からみなさんへのメッセージを話していただきました。すべて英語のスピーチでしたが、一言も聞き逃さないように真剣に話を聞いていました。トム先生からの心のこもったメッセージです。以下に全文をご紹介します。

Good morning everyone. I want to talk to you today about your school.
This school, Nishibiwajima Junior High School, is very different from my school in England. You are very lucky. So I want you to be active members in your school.
This is a very nice school because you do everything together and your teachers are amazing.

In your school, you eat lunch together in your classroom. You get the food and you share the food out together. You do club together. You walk to school and go home together. You go on school trips to a camp and to Tokyo. You sleep together in the same rooms. You have shared experiences, the same experiences, so you make strong and deep bonds, you make many memories together, you become friends, you become a real class unit. You have a class flag, a class banner and a class motto. You are very lucky.

In my school, we go to school separately. We eat lunch in a cafeteria in small groups. We don’t sit together as a class. We don’t have school club, so we don’t do anything together after school. We just go home separately. We do not go on long school trips. We go on one day trips. We just study together in the same class. That is it. We don’t have a class flag or a class motto. We did not become a strong class unit.

Also, your teachers are amazing. You are so lucky to have them. They work very hard for you. They care about you very much. They eat lunch with you every day. They do club activities with you. They do club activities on Saturday and Sunday and in summer vacation. They sometimes walk home with you. They come to your house to speak to your parents. They know where you live. They see your home. They take photos of your school events and make websites and newsletters. They even play soccer with you in the break time after lunch. It’s amazing.

My school teachers did not do that. They didn’t have lunch with us. They had lunch on a special table high up at the end of the cafeteria separate from us, like in Harry Potter’s Hogwart’s school. They didn’t do club activities with us. We did nothing on Saturday or Sunday. We did nothing in summer vacation. They didn’t take pictures of our school events and make websites or newsletters. They never played with us in the break times after lunch. They didn’t come to my house, they didn’t know anything about me. They just taught lessons, that’s it. Your teachers are amazing. You are so lucky.

My message to you is that you are very lucky. You have a very special school. You have amazing teachers and you can do so many things together as a class. You can make very special memories and you can be your best in this school. Everybody supports you. Your class supports you, your teachers support you, the school supports you. You have a great chance to be your best. So, please, please, be an active member of this school, be an active member of your class, play with your friends, talk with your friends, support your friends. This is an amazing school. Please enjoy it, respect others and you can be your best.

　みなさん、おはようございます。今日は、あなたたちの学校について、お話したいと思います。
この学校、西枇杷島中学校は、イギリスの私の学校とは大きく異なります。あなたたちはとても幸せです。だから私は、学校の中で活動的なメンバーになってもらいたいと思います。
すべてのことをみんなで一緒に行うことができるので、ここはとてもよい学校です。先生たちも素晴らしいです。

　あなたたちの学校では、教室でみんなが一緒に昼食を食べます。みんなで一緒に同じものを食べます。部活をするのも一緒です。学校に来るときも帰るときも（だれかと）一緒です。キャンプや東京への修学旅行にも出かけ、同じ部屋で一緒に寝ます。みんなで同じ経験をしているので、本物のクラスのまとまりとなり、絆は深くなって多くの思い出ができます。また、あなたたちは、学級旗や級訓があります。あなたたちはとても幸せです。

　私の（イギリスの）学校では、みんな別々に学校に行きます。私たちは、小グループで食堂にて昼食を食べます、クラスで一緒に座っていません。学校の部活動に参加していないので、放課後は特に何もせず、別々に家に帰ります。私たちは長い期間、修学旅行に行っていません。日帰りの旅行には行きます。私達は単に同じクラスで一緒に勉強する、それだけです。学級旗や級訓はありません。クラスのまとまりはありませんでした。

　また、あなたたちの先生には驚かされます。そのような先生たちがいるのはとてもラッキーです。先生たちはあなたたちのために一生懸命に働きます。君たちのことをとても気にかけてくれます。毎日一緒に昼食を食べます。一緒にクラブ活動を行います。土曜日や日曜日、夏休みもクラブ活動を行います。時々一緒に家まで歩いていきます。あなたたちの両親に話すために家庭訪問もします。あなたたちが住んでいる場所を先生たちは知っています。学校行事の写真を取り、ウェブサイトやニュースレターを作っています。昼食後の休憩時間にあなたたちとサッカーをすることさえあります。それは驚くべきことです。
